Understanding a silk press.
A silk press is the reinvented press & curl; the press & curl of the new millennium! Instead of using heavy greases and pressing combs, a silk press consists of specialized products that help detangle and protect your natural hair against the heat of the blow dryer and flat iron. The products also help temporarily straighten the hair without leaving it heavy or oily like the grease our mom's used to use. (Lol!) Your completed silk press should be light, soft, shiny and full of body.
How long does a silk press last?
A silk press will only last until your next shampoo. However, you must avoid moisture (rain, humidity, steam, etc) in order to prevent your hair from puffing or reverting back to its natural state.
Will a silk press damage my hair?
There is some risk that comes with a silk press, more-so if it is not done by a professional. It is key that the flat irons are not set too high during the service and that you don't over iron each section. Excessive flat ironing in between services, in order to maintain the style, can also cause damage. Your hair should revert back to its natural texture when shampooed. Best results and the most protection always come from having the service done professionally.
Can a silk press be done on relaxed hair?
Because the silk press is mostly about the products used, it technically can be done on relaxed hair but is not necessary. Relaxed hair has already gone through a straightening process with the relaxer and typically has its own products to help protect and strengthen the hair that work alongside the relaxer used. Typically heavy greases and oils are not used on relaxed hair anyway because it doesn't need much help staying straight.
